What is MLD?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of massage therapy that uses gentle, rhythmic strokes to stimulate the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is responsible for removing excess fluid and waste from the body. MLD helps to promote lymph flow and drainage, which can help reduce swelling and inflammation, improve circulation and boost the immune system. This blog will explore the many benefits of manual lymphatic drainage post-surgery.

Benefits of MLD post-surgery:

Reduced swelling:

One of the primary benefits of MLD is its ability to reduce swelling. Swelling is a common side effect of cosmetic surgery, it can be uncomfortable and make it difficult to move around. MLD can help to reduce swelling by promoting lymph flow and drainage, allowing excess fluid to be removed from the body more quickly.

Improved circulation:

MLD can also help to improve circulation, which can aid in healing and recovery. Improved circulation can help to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the affected area, which can help to promote healing.

Boosted immune system:
MLD can also help to boost the immune system. The lymphatic system is an important part of the immune system. MLD can also help to promote lymph flow and drainage, which can help to remove toxins and waste from the body.

Why is MLD so important post-surgery?

MLD is an essential part of recovery post-surgery as it facilitates moving lymph fluid by gently directing it back into the lymph vessels, reducing swelling, retention of fluids and pain after the surgery.
Without a manual lymphatic massage after liposuction or similar surgery, there is a potential risk of inflammation evolving into fibrosis, a permanent hardening of the tissues or a Seroma (formation of pockets of blood)
Procedures to complement and enhance the effects of your surgery:
Ultrasonic Cavitation & Radio Frequency:

Cavitation is intended to minimise the pockets and bulges of fat that can remain after liposuction, so that your body will be smooth and sculpted.

Combining cavitation with Radio frequency helps to tighten, tone and lift the skin. Radio Frequency gently heats and also aids in the breakdown of cellulite causing fat cells. The body then flushes out these cells via lymphatic drainage.
Benefits include:

• Tighter, firmer skin

• Improved skin tone, colour and texture

• Improved lymphatic drainage, which leads to clearer skin.

• Increased blood flow, which allows more oxygen and nutrients into the skin.

• Improved metabolism in the skin

• A lifted appearance with improved contouring

Why not complement your MLD sessions with Pressotherapy Lymphatic Massages?

Reduce and ease inflammation, soften and reduce scar tissue. Promote regeneration and enhance extra-cellular fluid clearance to be naturally dispelled by the lymphatic system.
Manual Lymphatic or Pressotherapy Lymphatic massage is recommended and beneficial pre and post-surgery as it facilitates the preparation of the body for the surgical procedure as well as healing regeneration post-surgery.
The lymphatic systems lymph vessels are stimulated during the massage to eliminate unwanted waste substances such as bacteria, excess fluid, viruses and excess proteins from the body.
It is advisable to have a series of Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massages (performed by hand) immediately post-surgery, then as an optional extra you can also continue with Pressotherapy Lymphatic Massage approx 3 to 4 weeks after completion of Manual Lymphatic Drainage massages depending on the individual healing process.
